New York seems to captivate the world more than any other city in the States, luring millions of tourists there each year. This is all for good reason; incredible skyscrapers, shopping galore and wonderful multiculturalism – New York really has so much to offer. But if you’re looking for a similar experience without the hordes of tourists, Chicago could be the perfect alternative destination.

To begin on a musical note, Chicago is widely thought to not only be the birthplace of Blues music, but also hugely inspirational to the rock and roll movement – particularly stirring the musical brainwaves of Mick Jagger’s Rolling Stones and Robert Plant’s Led Zeppelin. The ‘Windy City’ bursts to life with musical history, and it would, therefore, be a shame for a visit to not include at least one evening soaking up this legacy in a few of Chicago’s numerous Blues clubs.
Spoilt for choice, one of the most popular places to dance the night away is Rosa’s Lounge – a family-owned establishment always guaranteed to host a full crowd ready to soak up the musical prowess of local musicians and upcoming talent from elsewhere. Alternatively, Kingston Mines is another sought-after club, and it is relatively inexpensive to spend an evening here at just $12 a ticket. You can also sample some of the best BBQ food in Chicago here, from an array of different types of chicken wings to mouth-watering ribs. Blues and BBQ really is a great combination.

Of course, blues music isn’t for everyone. Alternatively, for those that enjoy sport, an interesting way to spend a couple of hours would be to watch Chicago’s Blackhawks. Chicago is known for enduring some pretty humid days, so the perfect way to escape this humidity would be with some Ice Hockey! Current NHL betting odds on bet365 back the Blackhawks at +1300 to win in the 2017/18 campaign, so if a visit coincides with this, it could be a great experience to watch this intriguing sport.
Music and sport aside, like New York, Chicago has its fair share of skyscrapers. Being the second tallest building in the United States, the Willis Tower offers spectacular views from the 103rd floor and is certainly well worth the trip up. Back on the ground, an afternoon could be well spent at the Millennium Park, a public park with impressive architecture and interesting art. Throughout the year, various events are held here, including ice skating in winter. Another wonderful thing about Chicago is that it has all the characteristics of an urban city, but it sits on Lake Michigan, offering a nearby change of scenery. This gives perfect respite from the bustle of city life and provides an opportunity to unwind and relax with breathtaking views. Like Blues Clubs, Chicago offers stunning beaches in abundance, so it is really wise to do some research prior to any visit to pick out the best spots!
New York will undoubtedly remain more popular than Chicago. But this goes in Chicago’s favour. Being less flooded with tourists, it has a more laid-back, cool atmosphere, but like New York, has more than enough to occupy its visitors.
